Both in third-world countries as well as here, in Switzerland, the socially disadvantaged are often additionally excluded from the labour market and thus from earning money. With TUMICA, an unusual idea was realized that created jobs for a highly varying range of social groups here as well as there. Craftwork from Africa was imported at fair-trade prices and finished and marketed by drug addicts here in Switzerland.
Datuma has substantially supported the project as to operations and finances, above all in its starting phase. Once its feasibility was proven, TUMICA was also supported by the state. However, following five successful years, government aid was limited so rigorously that working with drug addicts in Switzerland proved unfortunately impossible henceforth. That’s why today TUMICA focuses on granting small and medium-sized loans to third-world projects at favourable conditions, to allow new jobs to be created with the priority always being the promotion of self-help.
