For some years, the Zurich cinema Morgental showed films that you hardly had an opportunity to see anywhere else. The group managing the cinema project knew they needed additional halls to be able to assert themselves in the respective segment of the film market. This opportunity presented itself when the former Union cinema on Neugasse was offered for sale.

The group remodelled it into the RiffRaff cinema that quickly established itself as a significant site of demanding studio films. As the RiffRaff with its two halls and popular cinema bar was very successful, its owners decided to buy the adjacent property as well and expand by another two halls. Along with some other interested parties, they developed the “Neugasse residential and cinema building” project that was to house the two RiffRaff movie theatres 3 and 4 and about 15 high-class flats at reasonable rents above a bistro.

On the one hand, the flats were to contribute towards the economic feasibility of the entire project, on the other one develop new dimensions of living in the midst of town. In this manner, flats were created that turn quite some conventions as to spatial arrangements and functional sequences upside down. Nevertheless, all of them could be let right away.

In the case of the Neugasse residential and cinema building, Datuma contributed much more than mere finances and the company was directly involved in developing and managing the entire process.
