The intelligent use of energy, the protection of the environment and a contribution to the development of third world countries – these are the ambitious goals of Lessoco. The Swiss company is specialized in projects under the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) of the UN climate organization UNFCCC, which implements the objectives of the Kyoto Protocol.
Lessoco develops and implements projects focussing on energy efficiency – and thus reduces the output of the greenhouse gas CO2 in the respective countries. In return, the UNFCCC issues so called Certified Emission Reductions (CERs) representing the saved amount of CO2. The projects will then be financed through the sale of these certificates.
Lessoco is currently implementing an energy saving lamp project in Eritrea – in cooperation with the Eritrean Ministry of Energy and Mines. In all electrified households, conventional light bulbs will be replaced by energy saving lamps. Thereby, the energy consumption of the East African country will be reduced by 10 percent. And because Eritrea is producing its power by burning oil and diesel, up to 200’000 tonnes of CO2 can be saved. The project not only supports the government of one of the poorest countries of the world, but also directly helps the people: By saving energy, the individual households substantially reduce their electricity bill – and therefore have more money to spend.
Other energy saving lamp projects and other CO2 reduction projects are currently in preparation.
Lessoco is a profit-oriented company and has a strategic partnership with the Swiss foundation myclimate. Datuma is the principal shareholder of Lessoco.
